Butterfly Kisses Care Baskets

Butterfly Kisses Care Baskets is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the goal of bringing care baskets to children who are battling for their lives against childhood cancer or other serious illnesses, as well as raising awareness for childhood cancer throughout the year. We realize that when a child is diagnosed with a terminal illness, it not only affects the child but the parents, siblings, and the rest of their family. For this reason, we strive to bring a “butterfly kiss” not only to the child who is ill, but to the siblings as well. Our hope is that we will provide a smile among the shattered world of life-threatening illness, and that we will rally a community to make a difference through the smallest acts of kindness.

What is ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

Families Against Neuroblastoma: Mauvember Campaign

Neuroblastoma is a cancer of the nervous system which often occurs in the abdomen and can spread to all other parts of the body including the bone, bone marrow and brain. It is an aggressive and most common form of childhood cancer, with over 100 children being diagnosed each year. Sadly there is an 80% chance of relapse and currently no relapse protocol in the UK.

Although our offices are based in Hunstanton, Norfolk, as a charity we support over 200 families nationwide through every stage of their journey. We fundraise for potentially lifesaving treatments which might not be available on the NHS as well as research, holidays, treats and wishes and many other aspects to help and support families in their fight against neuroblastoma. We also have a number of international families within our support group, who are always happy to network with us and each other.

Next month we will be launching our national campaign ‘Mauvember’. During November lots of men grow a moustache to raise awareness of male cancers but little men get cancer too! So what better way to raise awareness than to don the Neuroblastoma and FAN’s brand colour of purple! To help us spread the word and promote our cause, we would like to see and receive photos of as many people as we can, getting involved and advocating the campaign by wearing it purple. There are lots of things that can be done, some to raise funds and some just to raise awareness; wear a purple wig for a week, get everyone to wear a purple moustache, dress in purple for the day, have a purple cake sale, etc.

Also if anyone wishes to fund raise on our behalf then we would love for them to get in touch.

Adopt a pig

photo_pigs1

Adopt a Pig is a program designed to help children and their families cope as they face their greatest challenge, fighting cancer.  Proceeds benefit a variety of support services and coping mechanisms for patients and their families.

How the program works

  1. Pediatric cancer patients and survivors paint and decorate piggy banks.
  2. Sponsors adopt the piggy banks for an initial $25 fee and begin collecting donations.
  3. When each bank is full, the change inside is counted and a check is sent to Adopt a Pig.  Sponsors keep the piggy bank as a personal reminder of a child’s fight against cancer.

Emma Rose – A Patient Helping Patients

598694_258292274303400_1386499496_n

Hi! My name is Emma Rose. I am a 17 year old Leukemia (ALL) patient. I was diagnosed with cancer in January, 2012. It has been a tough year, but I am finally starting to feel better. I am entering the maintenance phase of my treatment. Even though this is the “easiest” part of my treatment, it still consists of daily oral chemo and almost monthly spinal taps until May 2014. Since my diagnosis, many people have helped my family and me in many ways. Now, I want to do something to give back. I want to help other kids with cancer who are also being treated at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.
We are always looking for comfort items the kids can use during their stay- especially pillow pets, soft blankets, fuzzy socks, gift cards (ideally $15 iTunes), lip balm, and mini hand sanitizers. We also have specific donation drives going on which you can learn more about in the posts. Right now we are doing a “Movie Night” donation drive. Since the children cannot go to the movie theater, I want to bring the movie theater experience to them. Please consider donating movies, microwave popcorn, and movie theater candy. We have a specific wishlist on Amazon if you are looking for ideas. Thank you so much!
Please make sure all donations are new and in their original packages.

All mail and packages can be sent to Emma Rose, PO Box 485, Thiensville, WI 53092. Thank you so much for your generosity! ♥ Emma Rose
